20mph Conference ‘A SLOWER PACE MAKES A BETTER PLACE’

Special conference attracts Ministerial support
23rd May 2013, Coventry Transport Museum

A special one day conference, attracting the support of Transport Minister Norman Baker, is being held on Thursday 23rd May.  Entitled “20mph: A slower pace makes a better place”, the conference is designed to provide delegates with a practical insight into the rationale for introducing 20mph zones including: key operating principles, highlighting case studies of where this has been done successfully.  It will also showcase best practice as well as health benefits.

The event, which also includes a site visit to Coventry’s city centre 20mph zone, is designed meet the needs of transport planners, urban street designers, traffic and road safety engineers, local community and campaign groups who may be considering the introduction or expansion of 20mph zones in their local areas.

Delegates will hear from a range of leading experts including Tom Platt of Living Streets, Professor John Parkin of South Bank University and Rod King from the 20’s Plenty for Us campaign group.  Keith Taylor, Green MEP for South-East England will also address the conference.

Organised by transport conference specialists, PTRC, the conference is being organised in partnership with 20’s Plenty for Us and Living the Streets. It is being held at the iconic Coventry Transport Museum.  It is supported by The Local Government Technical Advisers Group (TAG) and the event will be chaired by Phil Moore, Vice President of TAG.

Transport Minister, Norman Baker will address the conference by a special video link reflecting the support of government for local authorities to consider expanding the use of 20mph zones in their areas.

Zeenara Najam, Head of Technical Development, PTRC says: ”This conference will provide a comprehensive overview of 20mph limits including its impact on health. The day will be a great opportunity to share your experience with others and learn how to implement 20mph limits cost effectively in your areas.”

Tom Platt, Living Streets London Manager said: “With new government guidance giving local authorities the green light to implement more area-wide 20mph speed limits on residential and major streets, this year’s conference offers the ideal opportunity to discuss how this guidance can now be implemented on the ground and what barriers remain to local communities benefiting from 20 mph in their neighbourhood”.

Rod King, Founder of 20’s Plenty for Us commented: “When the first 20mph Places conference was run in 2009 there was just one local authority with a ‘Total 20’ policy for all residential roads. Now over 8m people live in places with such a policy including some of the UK’s most iconic cities.”

Places at the conference are still available and now on a “2 for the price of 1” basis.
