Press Release:

Public Transport experts to discuss bus funding and grants at conference

PTRC is holding a one day conference on the Better Bus Areas Fund and Bus Service Operators Grant (BSOG) Reform. Chaired by renowned Professor Peter Mackie from the Institute for Transport Studies, University of Leeds, speakers include David Sidebottom, Passenger Focus; David Young, SYPTE; Robert Montgomery, Stagecoach; James Padden, DfT; Mark Kemp, Oxfordshire County Council and Matt Gamble and Alan Brett, Atkins.

PTRC is pleased to announce Norman Baker, Parliamentary Under Secretary for Transport will be the key note speaker.

The conference titled Better Bus Areas and BSOG Reform will be held on Thursday 25th April 2013, at The Axis, Birmingham.

Department for Transport (DfT) has announced reform and changes to BSOG. The reform will include devolution of BSOG to local authorities to allow decisions to be taken locally. There will be the creation of a new local government fund Better Bus Areas (BBA) which will encourage local transport authorities and bus companies to work closely together to improve services, and boost passenger numbers by submitting business proposals.

Zeenara Najam, Head of Technical Development, PTRC says: ‘Being a leading transport training and conference provider, PTRC is organising this one day conference to provide timely opportunity to transport professionals in public and private sectors, to share knowledge and good practice of bus partnership and governance, discuss different aspects of BBA2 and BSOG reform, generate innovative ideas for interventions and packages for bid proposals and avail an excellent networking opportunity.’

David Sidebottom said: ‘Transport policy has a great impact on passengers expectations; it is important to take account of passenger experiences and satisfaction with services, to successfully implement these polices. The conference will explore how passengers can get involved in the future direction of local transport policy.’

On speaking at the conference David Young said: ‘We will explore good examples of bus partnership and governance necessary to be considered as a Better Bus Area, as well as essential components such as the successfully implemented Sheffield Bus Partnership.  The conference will also include a presentation about the Sheffield Better Bus Area bid to the DfT.’

Matt Gamble and Alan Brett of Atkins said:  ‘The Conference will explore what passengers value and therefore what a Better Bus bid should contain; how does that relate to what we can measure and predict with conventional transport models and how do we reflect that in the bid; and how do we bring our stakeholders with us.’

The conference is organised in partnership with TPS, Travel South Yorkshire, Centro and Passenger Focus. The conference will be hosted by Atkins.
