PTRC LAUNCHES CYCLING LECTURE SERIES

Last night (18th April) saw the launch of a series of evening lectures on cycling, each one given by a keynote speaker who is expert in the field of cycling policy, planning and provision. The 12 week evening lecture series is called: ‘Cycling for Transport: a technical, society-focused and policy based overview’ and the lectures are held in central London.

Keynote speakers giving the lectures, which are being held weekly until 10th July, include: Professor John Parkin, South Bank University; Alex Sully, Alex Sully Consulting; Jim Davis, Cycling Embassy of Great Britain; Dr James Woodcock, Centre for Diet and Activity Research, Cambridge; Dr Rachel Aldred, University of Westminster; and Philip Darnton, formerly of Cycling England.

The aim of the series, organised by PTRC, aims to provide attendees with a broad range of best practice examples from the UK, Europe and the rest of the world, and to enhance technical expertise on the subject.

Topics covered by speakers will include views of and good practice examples in areas such as:

· cycle lanes and other schemes

· sharing road space and land-space with other users

· parking schemes for bicycles

· cycle training

· safety issues of cycling

· the health benefits of cycling

Last night’s introductory lecture was delivered by Transport Specialist Consultant Alix Stredwick. Alix, who has a background in policy and campaigning with a range of organisations including Sustrans and CTC, gave an insight into the lecture series and focused on potential cycling related policies, while interactive sessions generated ideas for encouraging.

PTRC’s Donna Cresswell, said: ‘Last night’s opening lecture was well-attended. The event had an excellent buzz and set the scene for what promises to be an engaging and stimulating series.’

She added: ‘This series of lectures is suitable for anyone with an interest in promoting cycling as a transport choice. They are designed as an insightful but informal way of helping Transport Planners, Local Planning Officers, Road Safety Engineers, Public Health Practitioners, and a wide range of people from voluntary organisations and academia to learn more about how best to provide for cycling, the latest research and techniques in health and transport provision, and the issues to address. Prior knowledge is not required!’

There’s still an opportunity to join the series and benefit from hearing leading experts from the world of cycling. (See ‘Notes to Editors’ for further details)
