Course Overview
Retro-fitting high quality cycling infrastructure is a significant challenge for engineers. Restricted space, UK driving rules and culture and political support are key challenges. This course explores different approaches to making cycling feel convenient and safe in urban areas, illustrated by case studies of innovative cycle infrastructure design.
We will help you to understand how to planning works and interventions to suit different circumstances. We will show the best available methods for designing for cyclists at junctions, main roads and quieter streets.
The session with Patrick was incredibly informative and interesting. He managed to fit a lot of detail into the one-day session, which didn't come across as too overwhelming. I liked how he structured the day and included breaks/time to talk and ask questions, which made the session flow nicely. The abundance of examples really helped to understand the different options for cycle design and I liked that these examples were from London, wider English towns and cities and also Europe, so we could compare designs styles.
