Public Inquiries, EIP and Informal Hearings – the crucial role of training for success

As a professional who has been involved in a number of public inquiries, I’ve come to realise how crucial it is to road test ideas, skills and strategies.

To be successful at inquiry, important skill sets are required to enable you to ‘know your story’, expand your story (in plain English) and be able to ‘recall the story’ when there are lots of different issues going on. On reflection, the journey from my first public inquiry back in 1998 and what I learnt from my peers and managers – and the experience since then – I realise the value of training and development in this area is essential. .

PTRC has delivered the Public Inquiries and Appeals course for over 15 years to a wide range of clients and small groups to larger scale training programmes. The course is regularly refreshed and tailored to deal with the different types of inquiries and hearings that are now in place under the current planning system. As the course leader, I ensure a strong mentoring approach is followed throughout the whole process, and give one to one support to participants, leading to a ‘mock inquiry’ on Day 2. The feedback so far has been very encouraging, and ensures that we tailor the language and approach to the abilities of the specific delegates in the room.
